You wouldn't by change have Norton Ghost? I am having the same problem and removing ghost fixed it up, then reinstalling ghost made the problem come back.

It might be overheating due to dust buildup or cooling fan slowdown.

Check the GIMP plug in repository, You'll have to Google it, and look for a plug in that will make gimp all one window. I know one existed but can't remember the name off the top of my head.
