    Katana 17 B12VFK-228XFR - big mistake (what is startup.nsh ?)

Correction : I finally got MSI support to give me a proper reply. There is indeed a driver to install, but all they gave me was the link to downlad it and a link to so-called support page telling me that Windows needs to choose the driver names Intel RST VMD Controller so-and-so. Then the chat...

    Katana 17 B12VFK-228XFR - big mistake (what is startup.nsh ?)

Thank you so much for your reply. As you can see in the attached files, I checked the BIOS boot options and made sure that the USB disk was first. You can also see that the Boot mode is locked to UEFI, which seems to me to be the correct option for Windows 11. I have included a screenshot of the...

    Katana 17 B12VFK-228XFR - big mistake (what is startup.nsh ?)

I bought this laptop as a replacement for a friend. I did read that there was no OS installed. Big deal, I thought, I know how to install Windows. Boy, what a mistake that was. I have a Windows 11 USB key installer that I know works. I went into the BIOS of the laptop and changed the boot order...

    SSD formatting

Maybe it's the USB enclosure. I had a problem like that once, a disk I knew was fine, but my external adapter did not allow me to do anything with it. I purchased a FIDECO sata/ide to usb 3.0 adapter, hard drive adapter (link here), and that allowed me to reformat and use the disk.

Laptop screen suddenly has a myriad of horizontal black lines

It's a laptop. I wouldn't know how to start dismantling it. If it were a PC, I would already have swapped the video card to find out if that was the issue. I reinstalled the video drivers, but that made no difference. And yes, I tested with an external screen and it is fine and shows no...

Laptop screen suddenly has a myriad of horizontal black lines

I have an ASUS ROG STRIX I7 G713QR-K1153T since november 2021. It has been working fine, every day, until today, out of the blue, the screen wobbled and suddenly I have a black line every ten pixels or so. It is quite a nuisance for work. Is there anything I can do, or is this a case of bring...

    Doubt hdd impact

I can't say if it is common, I haven't used all that many models. I do have an SSD that I cannot eject. When it is connected via USB, the first time I looked for the icon in the taskbar to shut it down, like I do for all USB peripherals (except the printer). Never found it. So I just pull the...

    Doubt hdd impact

I would venture to say that, with today's hardware, I would doubt that. Twenty years ago, it definitely wouldn't have been a good thing, but the external HDDs of today are sturdy beasts. I think you'll find that it will be fine. Besides, all you need to do to check is reconnect and peruse the files.

What has happened here to Tek-Tips??

Okay, I'm fed up with the mail notifications. I've gone through my Preferences and I have no notifcation activated whatsoever. Yet, I still get notified when there's a new thread in a forum I'm watching. Can anyone tell me what I have to lock down to get rid of that ?

What has happened here to Tek-Tips??

I had to send a support request to get my bookmarks back. I don't remember getting any email warning me about this change, but boy am I getting emails now (that I'm absolutely not interested in). What you need to do is go to your usual forums (good luck finding them back) and mark them as Read...

How to Transfer Licence to New PC

As far as needing a new key is concerned, the vendor is indeed correct and Microsoft would tell you the same thing. I have an old laptop with an Office 2010 license. I have since bought a new laptop and, when I tried to install my Office 2010 on it, it replied that my was invalid. I contacted MS...

    Unallocated space on hard/ssd Drive

Can't the Disk Manager help you ? Press the Windows key, type disk and choose Settings/Create and Format hard disk partitions. I'm sure that should be able to do something for you. I've got nothing to hide, and I demand that you justify what right you have to ask.

Need to change OS on HP laptop

You're right and I thank you for pointing it out. Don't worry, I burned the proper ISO image at 8x. It worked :) I've got nothing to hide, and I demand that you justify what right you have to ask.

Need to change OS on HP laptop

Oh, and pro tip : don't burn bootable ISOs to a DVD-RW. For some strange reason, they don't work on RW media. Lesson learned. I've got nothing to hide, and I demand that you justify what right you have to ask.

Need to change OS on HP laptop

UPDATE : Okay, my bad. Microsoft's Vista Home Premium ISO is not boot enabled. I'm going to have to redo the damn thing with boot enabled. Pfft. Forget about this. Sorry to have bothered you for nothing. I've got nothing to hide, and I demand that you justify what right you have to ask.
