Try a differend blending mode on the text layer like color, or overlay.

Make the image as low a resolution as you can get away with, without looking to crappy. Then put half transparent text across the image with your name or something like that.

This is a common problem with macs, there is no known solution that i know of.

I figured it out, it was the immense file sizes of the pictures, and the quantity that made it slow, so i photoshoped them and made thumbnails.
