    Linksys Gigabit Expresscard EC1000 problems

I am so disappointed with Linksys. I have only been purchasing Dlink and Netgear products and purchased this EC1000 for my Dell Inspiron 9400 with Windows XP. I purchased the USB gig adapter and it worked like a charm, but wanted something less bulky, so I purchased the EC1000. Got a...

    Gig PCI card performance

Just finished a bit of a write up with work that I just completed. We keep getting feedback from various customers who wonder why they can't use their laptop/desktop with a 1 Gb card and their favorite analyzer. So we threw a quick test together comparing Ethereal, Fluke Networks Protocol Expert...

    Decodes

I've started a new section on my website called Decodes, where I simply take screen shots from various protocol analyzers decoding the same packet to illustrate that not all analyzers decode the same way. I'm also going to add some background info about the protocol for educational purposes If...

    Ethertype 8781

While Sniffing at a customer site I found some Ethernet II packets with an Ethertype of 8781. Several of my protocol analyzers decoded up to the Type portion of the packet and then indicated that the rest of the payload was not interpreted or decoded. After some poking around I found that...

    Rapid Spanning tree decode issue

NAI's Sniffer Pro does not decode Spanning Tree version 2 packets (Rapid Spanning Tree) packets. I used Ethereal to decode them properly and will let NAI know. 'Making things work better; bit by bit.'

    Sniffer 4.7 and memory issue

I just removed Sniffer 4.5 and installed 4.7 along with the new card drivers for my Xircom. When I start a capture I get the following warning: "The size of buffer memory is more than half of available physical memory. This may cause slow application performance and may drop...

    Sniffer 4.5 CRC's Incorrectly Identified

BUG - CRC's Incorrectly Identified - March 14, 2002 If you have ISO/Ungerman Bass packets on your network, Sniffer incorrectly labels these packets as having a BAD CRC. To find out if your packets fall into this category check if the SAP addresses are FE or FA.

Sniffer 4.5 Ack Too Long (%1!u!ms)

BUG - Ack Too Long (%1!u!ms) - March 14, 2002 I find it annoying seeing those Ack Too Long messages with all that gibberish at the end. To fix it, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Network Associates, Inc.\Sniffer Pro\4.5\Expert\Local\Alarms\Alarm - 14008 and clean up the Description key.

    TIP - Finding Packets - Jan 31, 2002

While in the detail screen (middle) pane, right click on a decoded protocol value (ie IP - Identifier) and select 'Find Frame' from the pull down menu. Then select the 'Data' tab and you'll notice that the Sniffer automagically filled in the offset and data values. A few notes, this only...

    Duplicate packets

I have a situation where an ASN with two ethernet interfaces are taking UDP broadcast packets and duplicating them. This happens until the IP time to live expires. Is there a configuration parameter on the router equivilant to the Cisco Ip Helper command?

    NTP (daytime) decode

I just captured a few NTP packets and noticed that the NTP information isn't decoded nicely in the Detail screen. It just decodes up to the TCP header amd mentions the length of the payload. Is this how it is supposed to decode NTP? I've got a sample trace if you're interested, but its easy...
