The problem is most likely as Firewolfrl says the usb port is dropping out. If you have it connected to a multi port usb hub. The hub may be gone bad.

Yes you can just remove the OS drive and put the new one in place and make a clean install of XP. If any thing boogers up then yes you can put the old os drive back as if it was never removed.

You can set it up to auto update and it will get you all the updates. Just have it download but not install so you can select what is installed. I did this after mine wouldn't run active X.
