5550 Console without keypad

Hi Does anyone know if the 5550 console software can be set up to run (directory search only)without a physical 5550 keypad being connected?
We have a switchboard overflow group who use standard 5312 IP phones but keep asking for the Directory software so they can use the advanced search features, by department/location etc. I can't get this to run without a physical keypad, I programmed a 5550 console up on our Mitel controller, put a valid keypad MAC into the config wizard but left it unplugged but the software install cycles and gets stuck at Configuring keypad. Is there a way to "spoof" it, or is there another way to get Mitel directory lookup on one or more networked PCs? We have a few 5540s but the directory lookup on them is rubbish!

There is a Console softphone offering as of Rel 7.0 but you will need to buy it

Otherwise, UCA, again you need to buy it.

If you are looking for a way to get functionality without needing to purchase it which is the sub-text I get from your post, then no.
