Automated tape backup problems

I have a Dell PowerEdge server with a xeon chipset, 36 GB SCSI hard drive partitioned in half. Windows 2000 Server as an operating system configured as a Member server. The secound hard drive (D) is utilized as storage for 7 client computers to access their files. Active Directory is not setup; I stood up this server very simple in hopes to make things easier. I have a tape drive and have tried everything and can't get an automated backup to work. I recently purchased a Maxtor external (IDE) hard drive in hopes to get an automated backup to work. I have even tried to run a batch file with no luck. I'm afraid if the server goes down my job will along with it.

Any inputs will be greatly appreciated.
