Can someone please explain how a virus can infect a system without executing the infected attachment when we use GroupWise text only messages.

A few of our clients reported that someone from my office sent them the Navidad virus which totally "took out" their computers. I keep our antivirus software (VirusScan) updated and it had the most recent dat file installed. After I receieved the call, I checked out the user's computer and VirusScan reported and removed a W32/Hybrid@MM virus.

Our office also received the same email containing the navidad virus, however I deleted the message before the user even had a chance to glance at it.

What is happening here? Also, what do you guys tell your customers/clients when they call you complaining that you sent them a virus and destroyed their computer??? I know what I would like to say...but I must be professional and respectful :) Thanks much.

At the top of the Forum is FAQ section that has a link to virus info that will take you to symantec and their encyclopedia that will explain the actions of this one.

If you have a client that was wiped out by navidad that came from you, then the client has not disabled scripting as was recommended by MS. Ed Fair
