connecting to external database

I m trying to connect project with an external database. i can connect to access database, but it wont let me connect to a different one. once itry connect, it displays as its connecting and then shows the error that it was not able to connect. it says either " AN UNEXPECTED ERROR OCCURED! THE DATABASE IS NOT CONFIGURED PROPERLY OR THE REQUIRED FUCNTIONALITY IS NOT INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER".
this is surprising, as i can connect to other database.
any help, would be appreciated.

I think I amy help you if you show me more details about the operation you want to do: what kind of database you want to connect, what data do you want to collect there and more information you can give me.

we are using a accounting software from maxwellsystems.com which is under the name NGS2000, if you visit their site.
i am using microsoft project for scheduling. so i wanted to keep track of actual data as compared to the estimate i do by importing the data directly to microsoft project.
please let m eknow if u need some more info.
