I just did a clean install of Windows 2000 on my computer (I re-did the partition and re-formatted). Prior to my install, I backed up all of my important files and software downloads onto DVD+Rs using Roxio 6.0. I have both a DVD player and recorder.

When I first installed Windows 2000, I got the i/o error when I attempted to read my recorded DVD in either DVD drive, although it would read other CD's. I found my manual for the DVD recorder and set my Primary and Secondary IDE Channels Transfer Mode to DMA if available. And voila - both drives now read the recorded DVD+R's.

Then I ran a windows update and updated to Service Pack 4 - which I need in order to install PC Cillan 2005. Now I am getting the same i/o error when I attempt to read my recorded DVDs. I am very frustrated because if I can't read them, then I can't finish the installation of the rest of my needed software (as many of them are on these DVD's that I made prior to reformatting my hard-drive).

I installed Roxio to see if that would help, but it dind't. I have searched the internet for something to help but haven't found anything...

If anyone has any suggestions with what I can do to fix this - it's greatly appreciated. My only thought right now is to re-do the Win 2000k install and not upgrade to SP4...

Thanks!
Carie

I think you answered your own question. My initial thought was bad disks, but I see that once dma was enabled, you can view the disks. You go to sp4, and then you can't, so remove sp4, or format and reload as you suggest.

Only other possibility, is to make sure you have latest drivers for your mainboard.

I don't want to have to start over if I don't have too... It takes too long... :) My computer is a Dell, so I'll go and see if there are any Bios or Driver updates on their site that may solve my problem...

I appreciate your input!

Sometimes I just don't understand all of this... I find it most puzzling when something worked before, then all of a sudden it doesn't. I had SP4 on my computer before I reformatted and all the drives worked just fine. The reason for my reformat is that I was having issues with Norton Internet Security and my email and couldn't completely wipe out NIS... Why can't anything be simple???

Perhaps you want to burn some test dvds right now, and see if those read.
