I have gotten some harassment by my ISP on the issue of open ports and spam. While I was able to prove that their concerns were invalid, I have started watching my ports. Does anyone know why IE uses 8 ports simultaneously? I run Windows 2000 on an Athlon box with DSL Internet connectivity. Thank you.

PS It occurred to me that someone might want to know what ports. As I watch it the port numbers seem to change although they are always in a block.

Are these ports the source of communications, or the destination of communications?

If the former, it could be because modern browsers parallelize content fetches. If a browser finds an IMG tag in an HTML stream, rather than fetching the image after fetching all the HTML, it fetches the image in parallel as a separate communication to the server.
