Hi,

I'm experiencing huge display problems with the Windows-XP, Plastic, Metouia and other Look and Feels (with the exception of the "Metal" Look and Feel) when I switched over from JDK 1.3.1 to JDK 1.4.2.

I've been told that in JDK 1.4 Sun uses other methods for displaying Swing components, but after watching my JAVA applications been displayed in such a disrupted manner on many different machines; I'm seriously thinking about going back to JDK 1.3.1 or (even worse, leave JAVA for what it is and go back to C++ or even Delphi).

My questions: Who has similar experiences with JDK 1.4.2 and what have you done to fix the problem (other than buying new computer hardware)?

The problems differ from PC to PC but mainly these are problems with unreadable characters, screens that are partially in a wrong colour. Menubars that showup at an invalid screen location, menu's that drop shadows, borders that are distorted, etc. etc.

For examples, see:

Is it possible you have a mixture of AWT and swing components on these pages?

When AWT and Swing are on the same frame, the results are very much like your screen shots.

The solution, if this is your problem, is to replace the AWT components with their swing counterparts.

Thanks for the tip! "Unfortunately" I don't mix Swing with AWT components. My assumption however is that some 3rd party "Look and Feel" might mix them up internally, thus generating these strange results in JDK 1.4.2.

Since the users of my program can select from a list of available the "Look and Feels" I suggested them to select the standard Metal or System Look and Feel, in case they've encountered display problems. For future versions of my programs, I'll probably leave out those "Look and Feel"s that caused problems in the past.

Best regards,

Tom
