I have a user that accidently moved a message to "Outlook Today" - the top of his PST directory. We are running Outlook XP using a POP3 mailbox.

This seemed quite odd to me that Outlook would allow you to put anything in that folder. Doing a search discovered it, but could not copy or move the messages out of Outlook Today. We were able to copy and paste the message contents, but the message is still there.

Anyone ever hear of this?

Awfully confusing.

I just tried it, and yes indeed messages can be moved to the top level of Outlook Today. I did a Find and was able to delete the message from the results window by just highlighting and hitting the delete key.

To access messages moved to the "black hole" of Outlook Today, use webmail. There is an up-arrow that will open this folder and allow you to forward and delete the messages.

I've seen this happen to Calendar, and never did figure out how to get email messages out of the calendar folder....

You can Disable Outlook Today to get the messages and move them to another folder.

Disable Outlook Today
---------------------

Disable Outlook Today by editing the registry.

1. Quit Outlook.
2. Click the Start button, and click Run.
3. Type REGEDIT in the Open box, and click OK.
4. Locate the following key and click to select it.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Today

NOTE: You may not have the Today folder under Outlook. If not, you must create
it. Click the Outlook folder, and on the Edit menu, point to New and click
Key. Type Today beside the folder that appears in the list below Outlook, and
press ENTER.

5. On the Edit menu, point to New and click DWORD Value.
6. Replace New Value #1 with Disable, and press ENTER.
7. On the Edit menu, click Modify and change the Value Data to 1 and click OK.
8. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
9. Start Outlook.
