The msiexec.exe process is starting when I open Wordperfect (as well as a few other apps). It tries to install parts of another application (autocad). If I just choose cancel a few times WP starts so no big deal - just an annoyance.

This started after I 'Fixed' a svchost.exe problems. I'm not sure what I really did - I simply made a choice in 'System Mechanic' as far as I know.

I've looked into this and have reinstalled WP, the msiexec utility, and looked at the registry.

I do see a wierd entry in the registry related to the file that the installer (msiexec) wants to load - acad.msi:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\7D2F387510059040002000060BECB6AB\SourceList]
"PackageName"="acad.msi"
"LastUsedSource"=hex(2):6d,00,3b,00,31,00,3b,00,58,00,3a,00,5c,00,42,00,69,00,\
6e,00,5c,00,41,00,63,00,61,00,64,00,46,00,45,00,55,00,49,00,5c,00,00,00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\7D2F387510059040002000060BECB6AB\SourceList\Media]
"MediaPackage"="\\Bin\\AcadFEUI\\"
"DiskPrompt"="Please insert the disk labeled \"AutoCAD 2007\""
"1"="AUTOCAD2007_23_0;"

I have Downloaded the Windows Install Cleanup utility, but have hesitated to remove the Autocad application. It is very hard to install this app.

So any other ideas? Can I just delete the registry entries.

Thanks.

Those Registry Keys seem to referring to Source Files and Media, in other words they are telling Windows where the Install files are. I don't think it is part of your problem.

Does System Mechanic have any "Undo" procedure, or is System Restore an option?

Perhaps your original install of Autocad has problems an should be re-installed. When it was installed was it as an Administrator?

This will show you how to install an .msi file with elevated privileges in case that may help.

Does the MSI Cleanup utility offer you any other alternatives besides Autocad?

System mechanic does have some undo protocols, but I went outside of it to 'fix' the problem. That may not have been what messed things up anyway. But it was at about the same time that I noticed this weird behavior.

I could reinstall AutoCad - as I don't really use it much. I originally installed it with admin priveledges. It has rather complicated prodedure with software registration and activation and such. But I rarely use it. Thing is, the problem did not start till months after I installed it.

Just thought I would ask here if a quick little fix of some sort might help.

Process explorer sure helps with knowing what process is being called, but it does not really point out why autocad is the file being promted for.

Thanks

Well I used the Windows Install Cleanup Utility and removed the AutoCAD entry and WP opens up cleanly.

AutoCAD seems to run well also - But the shortcut was gone, and I have not really put it through all of it's paces.

Thanks for the help - I guess I will never know what really caused this problem, but the cleanup utility removed some registry entries that were problematic!
