Hi,
On our SBS 2003 Exchange server...

I'm have a strange problem sending email to one domain that I know of, lets call it xyz.com. Here's the situation (some of the info/names have been changed to protect the innocent) :

1) I receive a email from xyz.com and if I 'reply' to it I always get the following type of response back from our server:

-----
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator.
<mail.ourco.com #5.5.0 smtp;550-authsmtp08: Host 218.37.213.66: No unauthenticated relaying permitted to>
-----
On the server in message tracking the last entry before the NDR says: "Message transferred to esmtp through SMTP"

If in outlook I click on the 'send again' button it always seems to go through. It sends the message again and I do not get a rejection.

When I track this second sent message on the server in message tracking is says:

"Message transferred to mail.xyz.com through SMTP"

Notice how the diffrence seems to be something to do with the ESMTP ?

I create a new email to someone at this xyz.com address and send it I never have a problem. It seems like it only is if I reply to a message from them.

Any ideas on why this might be happening?

Thanks for any help.

Yes...our domain (fabtex.com) does have a rdns entry. About a month ago I resolved that issue, so as far as I know it is working. I checked a couple times to be sure. DNS wise I think we have everything setup, the only think I don't really have is a spf record yet.

It seems to be something strange with the email from this domain. When I reply to their emails it removes all formating and I notice the original header says "received with ESMTP id" ... most emails come in with plain "SMTP id".

I'm new to exchange admin, so I'm sort of stumped at this point.

Thanks

More than likely, the company you are sending to is blocking you with SPAM software because you formerly did not have the RDNS entry. Have you tried contacting tech support at the target company? Together you might be able to resolve this sooner.

I hope you find this post helpful.

But that doesn't make sense. If they were blocking me I'd be blocked all the time. What's happening is that I'm getting NDR's when do a 'reply' to their email, but if I create a new mail to that same person and send it's ok.

Or if I do a 'send again' in outlook to the NDR it goes through the second time.

I've noted that in the Exchange message tracking that when ever it fails its always had that message '...transfered to esmtp through smtp"
