I have a notebook that boots intermittantly. That is, it needs to be started and stopped numerous times beofre it will actually boot. It recieves power and the status bar shows all icons in use, but it doesn't even begin to go through post, and the lcd screen doesn't light up. Then, inexplicably, after trying a number of times, it DOES start up. Any suggestions?

Sounds like some connection is bad (oxidized or loose). Remove every removable device, check the connectors and reseat firmly.
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com

You may have power problems.
To eliminate the battery, remove it and plug the AC adapter in, then try booting.

The problem is identical with either AC or DC.... I have yet to try Master Racker's possible solution, but there is another problem I've just noticed -- although there is 2 16 MB EDO cards installed, the system is only recognizing 4MB. I removed each card and installed them in the other's slot, however, this problem also persists.....
Try it with only one of the memory modules at a time. Try booting from floppy with the HDD unplugged.
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com

Based upon the symptoms, it sounds like it needs to be looked at by a
technician. The machine should be disassembled to look at connectors,
sockets, IC's, the CMOS battery, damage, etc.

Just to let you guys know -- after trying all your suggestions, and some real "tooth pulling" to get specific details from the user of the notebook, he finally informed me that these mysterious symptoms which "started happening for no reason at all" began occurring after a "major power surge....."
Ahhhh, the old "nothing has changed" syndrome......
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com
