Hello,

I did a basic install of Redhat 8 with the bundled version of postfix (1.x I think) configure it so that it would relay for my test domain. I could telnet to 127.0.0.1 25 from the console to test - worked fine.

then I decided to download the source code for version 2.0.7 from ran 'make' and 'make upgrade'

now when I try the same telnet test I get this instead:

[root@tf01dev01 root]# telnet 127.0.0.1 25
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to 127.0.0.1.
Escape character is '^]'.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Ken

I know nothing about RH 8.x. 7.3 is too good for me to upgrade.
I've only ever done postfix upgrades the easy way, by downloading the rpm binaries.
It looks like port 25 is not responding.
Can you scan it using nmap ?
Are you sure that postfix is running ?
Does ps show it running, or maybe its started by xinetd as needed. Did you check there too?
If you've got webmin, check the "bootup and shutdown" screen. It postfix running ?
Does you main.cf include your versions of the followings :
inet_interfaces = all
mynetworks = 192.168.0.0/24, 127.0.0.1
relayhost = mail.your.domain.name.come
Hope this helps better than nothing.

well i think everything is just fine

enter some smtp commands and you'll see the server will respond
e.g.

if you type
HELO
then the response should be something like
501 Syntax: HELO hostanme

if you type
HELO my.hostname
the you should get
250 connected.server.hostname

try it

Thanks for responding everyone.

Makes no sense, but I rebooted this morning and now I get the smtp banner and can issue commands.
