Hi all,

Im not much good with hardware issues and need some help.

The primary IDE controller appears on my PC is not being recognised. I think the actual wording is 'not present or not being recognised'.

This has led my system to switch to

'MS-DOS compatabilty mode'

when dealing with the C:/ & A:/ drives and also it is not recognising other hardware e.g modem.

Is this problem fixable?or do I need a new motherboard?

The Primary IDE controller is part of a dual system (primary & secondary IDE controllers) and cannot be uninstalled without uninstalling the dual system. I havenet done this as im not sure what it will do.

Will my PC still function if I uninstall the IDE controllers?

If I do will reinstalling them fix the problem?

Please help as Im shafted at the moment and need to get it fixed quick.

Thanx in advance

Starfishh :-(

In 95 and 98 you can remove it from device mangler and it will reinstall on the next bootup.
Shouldn't be any relationship between the IDE controller and the floppy or modem. Would be suspicious of virus contamination if all of this is happening. Also look into the BIOS settings for IDE and into device manager for IRQ conflicts. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Cheers Ed.

I was suspicious of virus contamination and have fully checked it out with McAffee. Virus Free...

A friend has suggested it may be a BIOS issue and is suggesting I reset the motherboard. What do you think?

IRQ conflicts?????

Thanx again

Reset to defaults shouldn't do any damage. Will probably require drive selection so look there first so you know what you have. And look into the IDE controller section also to see what is set up befor you change it by resetting. Ed Fair

Cheers Again Ed.

Im going to have a go 2nite and see if I can get it going. I fear a hard disk problem (old & dying) if not...

I'll post a message 2moro to let u know how i get on (if your interested)...

Thanx

Starfishh :)

Hoorah.

It seems to be fixed. I reset the motherboard last night and apart from my modem(which are always buggars) everything seems to be working fine....

My guess is the BIOS was at afult and the reset has corrected the problems. I doint know enough apart this sort of thing to be sure though....

Cheers anyway
