ENVIRONMENT:
===============
Server: Windows 2003 SBS R2 Premium (Includes Exchange and SQL ) (single server for now Will add remote agent for second server back up later. Will NOT be backing up clients.
Drive: Quantum DLT-V4 Tape Drive
Tapes: DLT-V1 160gb/320gb Only device on the SCSI Bus with Cable Termination
Software: Backup Exec 11d for Windows Servers Build 7170
SCSI Adapter: Adaptec 29160 in 32 bit PCI slot
RAM: 4 GB

THROUGHPUT TESTS:
====================
NOTE: Tests were conducted on Data Only with NO Exchange or SQL Databases in the backups no verification and with Anti-Virus disabled. The HP tool indicated below was recommended by Quantum and downloaded from the HP site it is HPTapePerf.exe

With Previous LSI Generic SCSI Host Adapter
Using HP Tool 2:1 10.00 MB/s 64K Block via Remote Desktop (RD)
Using HP Tool 3:1 9.98 MB/s 64K Block via RD
From Disk to Tape: 250-75 MB/s Using Backup Exec, gets progressively slower
From Disk to Disk: 15GB Data at 950 MB/min in 15:18 min (SATA RAID)

With NEW Adaptec 29160
Using HP Tool 2:1 10.00 MB/s 64K Block on Site
Using HP Tool 3:1 9.98 MB/s 64K Block on Site
Using HP Tool 2:1 10.00 MB/s 64K Block Via RD
Using HP Tool 3:1 9.98 MB/s 64K Block Via RD
From Disk to Tape: 75 MB/s Using Backup Exec
From Disk to Disk SAME DATA: 15GB Data at 830 MB/min in 17:28 min (SATA RAID – no changes)

WHAT I HAVE TRIED:
==================
- Replacing the SCSI card from low cost LSI gendering to $300 Adaptec 29160
- Updating Quantum / Backup Exec drivers (32-bit Symantec)
- Updating Quantum Hardware driver (Quantum)
- Tried Hardware Compression
- Tried Software Compression
- Tried Software Compression with Encryption
- NT Backup to Tape, Slower than Backup Exec
- Installed Adaptec provided SCSI cable (Terminated)
- Increasing block size to 512K from 64K in BE
- Increasing Buffers Count and High Water point in BE from 20/10 to 30/20
- Increased buffers to max 1024K

QUESTIONS:
==========
1. What is the recommended setting for the Adaptec 29160 Card?
2. What is the recommended driver for the Adaptec Card Latest Adaptec (installed) or the one provided with Windows 2003 SBS?
3. Could this be a limitation of the PCI buss the Adaptec Card is plugged into on the Motherboard? If so, are there any settings that might effect throughput?
4. Could this be a bad tape drive?
