After using my computer in my daily work as the webprogrammer, it slowly becomes more and more slow.

Now, I'm looking for a free software that keeps the computer in shape. Remove all slow things... maybe make dayly(??) defrag or other useful things. All to keep the computer in shape.

I'm sure there is a hacker out there with the same problem/wish...!!

Let me just add. I'm pretty sure it's not a virus. There is no such signs... I use pretty safe software (Firefox for web, Thunderbird for mail). I never open suspected files, either in mail or in web.

No matter what, it would be pleasant with the autumatic software. Then I can exclude this reason for the slow computer!!

I'm sure all Windows 2000 users out there will agree with me...!! :)

Chkdsk and defrag run those monthly not daily. Also keep msconfig cleaned out.

As for a program on cleaning things out give cccleaner a try.

Thank you very much for these suggestions CCleaner was great!! It removed 1 GB of data from ... somewhere...!!

Alsom the registry cleaner seemed very helpful for me!

Thank you very much!

n/p glad I could help. Yeah ccleaner is a very good program as wel as the registry cleaner. I use both quite often.

A few other bits and pieces:

* Empty the internet explorer cache. With modern hard disks, the default IE cache size is enormous and can easily be gigabytes in size.

* Empty your temp folder (and also C:\WINNT\Temp if your 2K is installed in the default location)

* Look at the cookies folder and remove old outdated files.
I sped up the login of a PC whose user had 10000 cookies in a roaming profile from 15 minutes to under 2 by removing this lot.

* Look in the Application Data folder and subfolders for things like Adobe Reader updates, Flash Player updates etc.
Once installed, these don't need to be stored and can reduce profile size quite considerably.

jrbarnett, that ccleaner program does all of that you just mentioned. That is why I showed it to him so he didnt have to manually empty all of them lol.
