I keep hearing that you need an "Approved NIC" to capture frame errors in Sniffer Pro. I searched their entire site and cant find a list of "Approved NICS" Can Anyone help? Thank You

The list of approved NICs are in the manuals that came with the sniffer. Hopefully you can thumb through them.

I hope this helps,
Philip Smith

The only apporved nics for the sniffer are the ones that are sold by NAI. The card is a Xircom CBE1 (Card bus adapter) or the CBE2 for laptops.
Be sure you have the exact card as these are the only cards that the enhanced drivers are written for. Without the enhanced drivers you may be able to capture packets but may not receive all the error information.

NAI has given up on the idea that only they can sell an "approved" NIC. I have the email from them about this. As long as you purchase the correct brand/model of NIC, it's "approved" I have the CBE2 Xircom which I bought from buy.com and saved quite a bit over the list price charged by NAI and it works fine.

A side bar is for quick and dirty sniffing, ANY nic will work as long as it's "promiscious". You give up things like runts and fragments but for monitoring normal traffic, it's a cheap way to go.
