When I go to check my spelling there isn't a dictionary to choose. It doesn't show up in the file window after I choose writing tools in the edit menu. It says "none" at the bottom. It gives the choice of Thesaurus, Main Dictionary or Hyphenated Dictionary, in the pull-down menu, but when I designate any of them, at the bottom of the window it still says "none". Do I need to download a dictionary? I thought one was in this program.

I'm a little confused with your description of the drop-down menu items but here goes anyway ....

First, make sure you've upgraded your AppleWorks to 6.0.4. That upgrade is available frrom Apple at:

Moving along ....

Make sure the English-Spelling dictionary is present.
It is located in the AppleWorks6 folder ...
AppleWorks6 | AppleWorks Essentials | Dictionaries

If it's present then you DO in fact HAVE a dictionary.

Assuming it's there and not corrupt, go to the
EDIT | Writing tools | Select Dictionaries

Check off the Main User radio button and click Choose.
Now navigate to the file hiearchy I listed above to locate the English-Spelling dictionary.

It's possible it's been moved or is corrupt.
You may try zapping the PRAM on restart and/or rebuilding the desktop file.

Pram - P-R-Option-Apple on restart for three tones
rebuild - same as above BUT no P key!

Let me know what happens ...
