Text on a Path

Well, I'm instantly stumped. Can't attach text to a path.
I follow the instructions, word for word, and it doesn't happen. Instead, the 'path' vanishes.

Now, either this works, or it doesn't work. Does anyone know? Adjudging from the low levels of activity in this forum, my chances of learning the answer here are kind of like betting on a Chihuahua vs. a Pitbull..... [sig][/sig]

I work with freehand (8&9) for cartography.
The guy who did this before attached all street names to a path. Does anyone know how I can detach them from the paths into ordinary boxes instantly (to decrease file size, because It won't RIP anymore)with the same rotations.
Think of cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Brussels, Berlin, Paris and other major European cities; A lot of vectorinfo in a file..
