Hi there -

I have a VPN server with 2 nic's, one inside 192.168.0.16, one outside 209.xxx.xxx.100. Server is part of my domain and uses PPTP for the VPN tunnel.

When a user tries to connect, they are getting denied, prompting for a username and password. Username for testing is "vpn". User set up both on DOMAIN and VPNSERVER. The event logs on the server read as follows:

Source: RemoteAccess
EventID: 20189
The user DOMAIN\vpn CONNECTED FROM 65.xxx.xxx.221 but failed an authentication attempt due to the following reason: There was an authentication failure because of an unknown user name or a bad password.

Microsoft has no KB article nor does the web in general.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Is your authentication at the VPN level or domain level? Glen A. Johnson

Thank you for the quick response. Sorry I could not reply earlier.

I have seen that KB article and have tried changing the policy for dial-in media. To no avail.

And I have tried authenticating to both the local VPN box and the domain it is attached to. Both are returning the same error message.

But this issue is resolved.
When I got on the local VPN box, I could not access anything else on the local network. All authentication was failing. I tried service packs and Windows Update and removing and re-adding it to the domain, but nothing would let me browse the network from the VPN box.
So I rebuilt the darn thing.

Do you have any idea what could have caused a machine to basically be disowned by the domain?

Odd, but resolved.
Thank you.

Without more details, I couldn't tell you what went wrong, but I'm glad it's resolved. Have a good one.
