I have several machines with AVG 7.0 - these 2 machines will not update. I get a error that tells me to make sure I have the server name correct. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling but nothing seems to fix this. The only time I was able to correct this problem was by ghosting the image from a different PC. Any thoughts?

I'm presuming you mean that they won't update using the built-in update manager on the free licence version.

Have you tried updating them using the latest manual download file? If that's successful then try the autoupdate approach.

There have been a large number of updates since AVG7's release, including some core updates that may affect that functionality.

This is what was sent to me from Grisoft tech support when I had this problem (7.0 Pro).

[highlight]Run AVG Control Center -> select Update Manager component -> Settings. Set Proxy, Dial-Up tabs (according to the connection type) and URL tab (a default settings is: If you use FireWall software, it is necessary to allow AVGINET.EXE and AVGCC.EXE files to have access to:
- - - a1683.g.akamai.net

The world is full of apathy, but I don't care.

I ran into the same prob few mths ago. Seems that 7.0 Free version updates from different server than Pro version. Since most users run free version, related server seems overloaded. Try following countermeasure:
Edit the 'hosts'-file on individual PC's and add the 'guru' line below the 'localhost'-line as follows

127.0.0.1 localhost
193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft.com

Win98:
C:\WINDOWS\hosts (Open with notepad & append 193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft.com below line '127.0.0.1 localhost')
WinXP:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (Open with notepad & append 193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft.com below '127.0.0.1 localhost')

Regardless the free version initially tries to update from the free-server, it will now point to the Pro updateServer.
Both free as pro 7.0 versions do use same updt definitions.

See this countermeasure as a temporary one until situation stabilized.

Thank you for the help...On the original machine I had problems with I found a piece of Spyware on it called "Knowledge Base" and once removed it updated fine.

Check out - they do lots of "high volume content" services for internet companies, so that could be ads, file downloads... all sorts of stuff.

figures... always gotta be one company that makes it harder to block ads without blocking legitimate material...

Guess it's a good thing I hadn't decided to start blocking them yet.

Iam sorry...it was spy ware called "ReleventKnowledge" that I found in the add/remove programs listing. It uninstalled without problem and then my updates worked fine. I ave had 3 machines to date with this happening.

if that's the case, then i suggest you scan (and repair) ALL of your pc's there using good anti-spyware proggies. if you found spyware, chances are you'll find them again (and again).

let us know if this helped. peace! [peace]
